The NEED of Life

Did share a story about coffee and cup with my colleagues. This story is about we do lose focus on what is the “NEED” and what is the “WANT” in our lives.

I can’t remember the whole story and also made up the last part of the story which highlighted in BLUE.
----------------------------------------------------
A group of people visited their professor after graduated from university. They were success in their professionals. After sat down, they started complaint their lives and works. All of them were not happy and not enjoy what they had because what they wanted was a lot more than what they had.

The professor was sitting there and listening. Later, he made a pot of coffee and served with diffierence kind of cups to the students. Those cups made by difference materials like glass, wood, paper, silver…etc.

His students chose a cup and served themselves for the coffee. After everyone had a cup of coffee on hand, the professor started to talk. “Just now all of you were complaining about your unsatisfied lives because you are not able to get what you expected.

When I asked you to chose a cup for the coffee, you tried to choose a better cup either in value or outlook. No one chose the normal and cheap paper cup.
Well, I would like to know, when you want to drink coffee, the NEED for the coffee is important or the NEED for the cup is important?

After the professor asked the question, silent from the students. The professor looked at his students and continued: Life is just like drinking coffee, most of time, we do lose our focus on the coffee and be more concern on the cup. It just like most people don't understand that have high social status and be rich are NOT the NEED of life.

The NEED of life is you are able to do what you want, you are able to enjoy/appreciate what you have and you are able to spend time for yourself and someone you loved. So, don’t you think have a good coffee is more important than have an expensive cup?”

That's a good story. Thanks.

Being driven by wants or desires leads to suffering.

Hi Brad,

Yes, i agree with you. This is where the suffering came from.

I am practising how to let go something that i WANT but not I NEED.
