There are 2 choices: give up yourself or the one you love. Friend chose not to give up the one she loves.

Same choice as the 老婆婆 in Accuracy of Death. She believed she always lost the one she loved: her parents, her adopted parents, her fiancé and her husband. Therefore, she left her son and not to acknowledge her grandson. she didn't want the one she loved who got hurt.

“You never known what is LOVE until you LOVE someone more than yourself”.

When you love someone more than yourself, you are willing to give up yourself for him/her.
